How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

By The Wave Agency

In America, it is fairly common for people to not see a dental professional in a given year. Around a hundred million Americans or more do not have yearly check-ups completed. This is a negative for one’s oral hygiene, because it is generally considered by dental professionals worldwide to be a necessity. Having a dental healthcare routine is great, and has plenty of benefits, but without a professional to check on progress or monitor plaque buildup, health issues can occur.

For those who have always been told that visits to the dentist should at least be twice a year, barring there are no imminent health issues you feel you wish to have checked, it is tough to know what is considered necessary for your oral health.

Your oral health stems from a variety of important factors, and it is unique for everyone. General habits, individual medications that one is taking, and frequency of brushing and flossing are all factors that may necessitate different amounts of dental visitations each year.

Some may only require a single visit to the dentist each year, again, barring any health issues that may arise or that seem to be an emergency or symptoms of something worse. Others may need to visit twice a year. For those that find themselves with frequent oral hygiene issues, despite positive oral hygiene habits, they may need to visit the dentist even more than twice a year.

Remember to ask your dentist when your next appointment should be scheduled. Often dental professionals are able to properly assess your level of oral hygiene to know when it’s best for you to be checked again.

Certain people with underlying conditions may need to see the dentist more than twice a year. This includes those of a greater risk of dental disease and other health conditions. Among them, people with gum disease, smokers, diabetics, and pregnant women are considered those who should be seeing dentists multiple times in a given year.
