Home Remedies for Tooth Decay
Tooth decay is something everyone wishes to avoid dealing with. It can be painful, and lead to a variety of other dental issues and procedures. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to prevent tooth decay even outside of a dentist’s office.
Alkaline foods
Keeping a high pH will naturally prevent cavities from forming. Avoid sugars and acids
Drink a lot of water
This flushes out acids, food particles, debris, plaque and bacteria
Baking soda and peroxide
Make a slurry and brush with the mixture. Baking soda is alkaline and a gentle abrasive that dissolves safely. It brings the pH up and polishes teeth. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen. It reduces harmful bacteria that cause gingivitis, bad breath and inflammation
Xylotol sugar free chewing gum
A naturally found substance that does not get metabolized by bacteria, xylotol is a substance that can control and balance bacteria in the mouth. The action of chewing stimulates saliva that bathes the teeth and fights cavities while cleaning the whole mouth.
Anticavity mouth rinses and toothpastes
There are a variety of good products out there. Use your discretion. Some patients are strongly against fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that is found in nature and at the right concentration it can provide benefits without any side effects. It has been proven to profoundly reduce and even reverse cavities. There are other minerals that can help with cavities as well. Calcium Sulfate, magnesium and casein calcium peptides are some, to name a few. Recaldent is a name brand of a mixture of these that is in dental pastes that are fluoride free but are not readily available to consumers but are distributed through dental offices.
A balanced, nutritious diet low in carbohydrates, rich in vegetables and calcium will reduce the formation of cavities.
