Dr. Kilimitzoglou on What to Know About Tooth Loss
By The Wave Agency
Millions of Americans are missing at least one tooth, with most of these millions missing more than just a single tooth. Missing teeth can be a mental struggle as well as a physical one, affecting your oral health in ways that many do not expect. It is important to consider mental health and how a full smile can affect one’s day-to-day, especially those who are self conscious about their tooth loss.
According to e.s.i. Healthy Dentistry’s Dr. Kilimitzoglou, “As the number of missing teeth increase, so do diseases and risk of death.”
Tooth loss increases the risk of disease within the body for many reasons, and it is not only oral health that is affected by these losses. Tooth loss can increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks and even conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Increased risk of certain cancers are also possible when one is missing many teeth.
In the words of Dr. K: “If you think about it, digestion begins in the mouth. It is no surprise then, that improperly chewed food has a devastating and far-reaching impact on our health.”
Improperly chewed food does not allow for further nutrition to be digested by your body. Foods that are left unchewed are simply not as beneficial to your body as fully chewed foods, robbing you of vitamins and other important aspects of nutrition.
One’s digestion is also affected by improperly chewed food. Unchewed food is still larger than other dissolved foods, meaning once it passes through your stomach, these large traces of food cause your body to work harder in order to digest these leftover food chunks.
Someday, it may become easier to organically fix damaged or lost teeth, but until then tooth loss is something that everyone who is diligent about oral health should try to avoid. Keeping a focus on preserving your natural teeth for as long as possible will ultimately prove beneficial for your entire body.
